Surat is called the Diamond Hub of the World, which goes through a major crisis today. The US imposed 50 percent tariff on polished diamonds imported from India, which shook the basis of this diamond industry. There is now silence in the factories of Surat, which once echoed with the voice of Emery Wheels. The industry says that this decision is like a tone, which can destroy the wealth that has been going on for decades. Surat was identified as a small town in the 1960s, but it became the world’s largest diamond clip and polish center after the government relaxed the policy on the import exports of gemstones. Today, this entire heritage is at risk. People related to the industry say that because of a 50 percent fee prepared in the US, they will have to move their business to the countries where taxes are less. Depending on the US market, about 40 percent of the polished diamond export of India goes to the US each year. In such a situation, this tariff has become a crisis of existence for the entire industry. Experts believe that India is the country where there is a unique art of cutting and shining small diamonds, which is high demand in the US market. Diamond Trade experts say that if this rate is permanent, a heavy scale work can be taken away after February 2026. He said that many small and medium diamond units are already closed. As a result, families of thousands of artisans and workers will be in crisis. The response from the industry, Bharat Diamond Bores (BDB) vice president, Mehul Shah, said ’50 percent of US service could close the Indian diamond industry because about 40 percent of the diamonds go there. Many businesses are now considering removing their production from India and once it happens, they will not return. Today, the unique art of the artisans of Surat and the hard work of six decades is at stake. If the solution is not found, India’s diamond industry, which gives the country a global identity, can gradually shift to foreign land.
