A startling case in Rajasthan made headlines, where Seema Goyal, the presiding officer of the Judicial Magistrate’s First Class, Hanumangarh, Chandraprakash sentenced Mena as Assistant Police Commissioner (ACP) in Delhi police and a fine of RS 5000. This decision was expressed on June 13, 2025, which created an atmosphere of discussion, not only in the local community, but also in the entire country. The case once again questioned the liability of the officials sitting in social evil and high positions such as dowry. The case began in 2010, when Chandraprakash Mena married Suman. At the time, Chandraprakash was of a normal background, but after marriage he was selected in the UPSC exam. He is currently working in the post of ACS in the Delhi police. However, everything was not good in their married life. Suman claims that Chandraprakash and his family after marriage have physically and mentally tortured him to claim dowry. Suman said Chandraprakash utilized its economic and emotional status and repeatedly demanded dowry. On March 30, 2016 in Bhadra, Hanumangarh, Suman filed a complaint with the judicial magistrate, accusing Chandraprakash under dowry torture (section 498A IPC), criminal betrayal (Article 406 IPC) and other divisions. The trial of the case lasted a long time and on May 10, 2019, Bhadra was acquitted by the additional judge of Chandraprakash from these allegations. However, Suman appealed against this ruling in the Rajasthan High Court, after which the case again reached the Hanumangarh Lower Court. Judicial magistrate Seema Goyal convicted Chandraprakash in terms of Article 498A (harassment of Dowry) on the basis of evidence and witnesses in the latest trial. The court found that there is enough evidence of the claim and harassment of dowry since the marriage to Suman. The court also noted that the high position of Chandraprakash and his social status in this matter came against him, because society expects more responsibility from an officer living on a responsible life. Along with the punishment, a fine of Rs 5000 was also imposed and there is a provision for additional imprisonment for repayment. About author Sandhya Kumari News 18 works as a senior sub -editor.
