Assam: Chief Minister has called on wetland protection to deal with urban flooding

Guwahati, June 3 (IANS). Himanta Biswa Sarma, chief minister of Assam, emphasized on Tuesday that the protection of wetland inside and around cities and towns is one of the most effective ways to reduce urban flooding. Sarma, who visited Silchar in the Cachar district to take the current flood situation, underlined the environmental threat that arose from the end of the wetland. He said that Silchar and his surrounding wetlands, such as Malini Beel, Mahisha Beel, Rangirkhal and singer, are a lively ecosystem acting as natural reservoirs and the safety of these wetlands will greatly help with managing urban floods in the city. The main minister accepted the effectiveness of the wetlands as a natural drainage bowl, and said the situation was confused when the wetlands were over. He said the government is considering long -term policy measures to permanently address the urban flood crisis. Sarma visited six relief camps at the Government’s Boys HS School, Normal School, Kendriya Vidyalaya Silchar, Hiron Prova Shishu Mandir, Cosmic Market and Ukil Bazaar LP school in Silchar City. He perished with the people living in the camp and understood their concerns directly. The chief minister ordered the district commissioner, Mridul Yadav, to provide all the necessary tools to the people living in the camp. He also instructed the administration to pay particular attention to the needs of senior citizens, breastfeeding mothers and children and to ensure medical care and access to safe and clean drinking water. Sarma said his government is committed to ensuring timely help, rehabilitation and assistance to all affected by the current tidal wave.
