Ranma 1/2 has achieved the rare status of anime royalty. During the initial run of Rumiko Takahashi’s manga in the 1980s and 1990s, it competed with and stood alongside the likes of Dragon Ball and other major martial arts titles, before the adaptation by Studio Deen helped deliver anime to the West just a few short years later.
In 2024, Ranma 1/2 returned in an all-new Netflix original reboot by the famous studio MAPPA, and although die-hard fans of the series made their criticisms and preference for the 1990s anime series known, the remake became a hit in its first season. Now, following the recent return of the series, Ranma 1/2 is breaking into Netflix’s top 10.

The 2024 Netflix Original Anime Is Building On Its Hot Start
Arguably the most recognizable title by the legendary Rumiko Takahashi, who has also given anime fans highly influential works like Urusei Yatsura and Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2 never exactly seemed like a suitable candidate for a remake.
Despite certain aspects of the series being undeniably progressive, other aspects of Ranma 1/2 haven’t aged spectacularly, and it often utilized a sort of crass humor very much of its time. Nevertheless, MAPPA tackled the iconic series in an all-new reboot that aimed to be more faithful to the original source material, and it seems to be paying off.
With the recent airing of season two’s second episode, Ranma 1/2 has found its way to the number 10 spot on Netflix’s top 10 Non-English shows, boasting an impressive 1.4 million views since the second season’s premiere. It’s the only anime to have made it onto the list, despite Netflix being home to some of the medium’s biggest titles.

As anime continues to skyrocket in popularity, Netflix is battling other streaming services in an effort to add the newest hit shows to their already sizable selection. Just this past summer, major titles like Dandadanand the breakout hit The Summer Hikaru Died found homes on Netflix.
However, Ranma 1/2 is proving that many of these exciting new names in the industry just cannot stand up to the classics. The fall anime season will also be bringing new seasons of similar shows Spy x Family and My Hero Academia to Netflix, but fans shouldn’t be surprised if Ranma and Akane continue to lead the charge.
