3,000 shows, so little time! How to choose what to see on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Playbill goes fringe benefits3,000 shows, so little time! How to choose what to see on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Two perk experts, with 25 years of collective perk experience, give their choices for what to see at this year’s festival.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest art festival in the world, with over 3000 shows. This year, Playbill will go to Edinburgh for the festival in August and we will take you. Follows together This summer we cover every aspect of the fringe benefits, including our real brigadone!
With over 3000 shows in the Edinburgh Benefits and International Festival programs, it can all be a little overwhelming. But we can help here at Ghost Light Global.
Ghost Light Global consists of best friends, traveling companions and lovers of theater: Chris Crouch and Molly Morris. We now have over 25 years of collective Edinburgh Fringe experience as producers, players and patrons. And we made our passion for the festival in a business, and travel for individuals, families, groups and theater organizations from across the country to the world’s largest arts festival in Edinburgh. It is our hope to demystify the benefits for others, because we think everyone should experience it and love it as we do.
So we scoured the lists again and did the homework to give some highlights on what to see and do in August at the Edinburgh Festival Benefits in 2023. And to make the otherwise terrifying abundance of options manageable. But before we opt for Fringe 2023, we want to give you advice on how to choose shows – especially if you are new to the Rand.
- Forget your mother’s advice and talk to strangers! People in lines will have good advice on what to see. Ask them what they loved!
- Take a “lucky dip.” Take a kite and see someone’s performance. Walk to a box office and book for everything next. Or on the official Fringe Mobile app (sponsored by the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society and Playbill), use the ‘Nearby Now’ feature to see which shows steps are from you, or the new ‘Shake to Search’ feature that will offer a random show for users by shaking their phones. Part of the magic of the fringe benefits is the discovery of the unknown and the possibility of being absolutely delighted. Fortune (sometimes) prefers the bold.
- The entire programs at The Traverse, a prominent theater in Scotland for new plays, and Summerhall – which form, a veterinary hospital, now a home for the arts and sciences – is especially exciting. It is worth spending a day to explore everything from art, exciting and installation theater, along with just about everything you could see on a stage.
- Examine cultural highlights with compound programs such as the Horizon Display window, House of oz, Made in Scotland Display window, Taiwan Season, Dance base, From start to Finnishand #Thanks.
Here are some of the things that make us very excited to see:

If you are a Britbox binger who loves musical comedy and mystery, Kathy and Stella solve a murder is the show for you. From visionary manufacturer Francesca Moody, this show is a return sale of last year’s festival, and probably a future West End hit.
Beautiful evil things is a solo show by ad infinitum. Their performance Ballad of the Burning Star Was a previous hit and this new offer received good reviews before their Edinburgh run.
JM Coetzee’s life and times of Michael K is surely theater magic of the puppeters behind War house and the 12-foot doll Little Amal (currently traveling through America). This stage adjustment of Coetzee’s novel (He is a Nobel Prize Award) examines the human experience by the lens of the South African Civil War.
Thrown is part of the Edinburgh International Festival, the Traverse Theater program, and is a production from the National Theater of Scotland – a combination of some of our favorite organizations. We can’t wait!
Geoff Sobelle is a theater maker who loved us. He is a unique storyteller, illusionist, clown and actor – and Food is his latest production. We expect it to be delicious.
Daniel Kitson is more than worth making worthwhile he accuses for his performances. In performances from Edinburgh to London to New York, we have never seen him. His shows are sold out quickly. Put on a ticket for First thing (work in progress) And find out why for yourself.
We have seen that all that Mark Thomas has done since he was blown away by his autoographically Bravo Figarowhich swept awards in Fringe 2012. This year is England and son It seems to be another personal and moving work with Thomas and written by Ed Edwards.
If a lot of physical theater struggles with themes of masculinity and how it is forcibly crossing each other, your suitcase, is Stuntman Van Glasgow Company Superman is perhaps for you. The additional combination of a production team and a venue we trust raises our interest.

American musician/actor Benjamin shoes was wonderfully heartbreaking with its deeply moving and personal story The lionwhich was widely worshiped in Edinburgh and later in New York. A mountain for Elodie want to be an equally moving follow -up.
The gods the gods the gods is another return hit that is a highlight of the phenomenal Summerhall program. After the fringe benefits of last year, it was on a global tour with good reviews and sold -out runs. It’s a wonderful late night at the festival.
Bloody is back for a very limited run at the traverse, so move fast. Lauryn Rescue’s excellent execution and personal story will surely touch your heart if you can get a ticket. It’s a gig theater at its best.
Cora Bissett is an absolute legend. Her biographical piece Of which girls have been made Will your nostalgic world be shaken in the 1990s with Cora’s memory of her brush with Rockstardom, with bands like Blur and Radiohead.
Tim Crouch is another beloved theater maker that brings back An oak treehis award -winning game. This beautiful piece of writing allows him to deal with a different, unprepared and unconscious guest actor every night.

In addition to the shows above, here are some other shows, artists and businesses that sound interesting to us:
- Nova By Overi Janice
- Scots By noisemaker and presented by oran mor’s a play, a pie & a pint
- Wiesenthalproduced by Nancy Nagel Gibbs at the pleasure
- Dark afternoonproduced by Alchemation and Glynis Henderson Productions
- Oh my heart, oh my house Of the first award -winning storyteller Casey Jay Andrews
- Duel realityof the acrobatic French-Canadian company Lesson 7 Doigts de la Main (The Seven Fingers)
- Plus the Ukrainian company Kyiv City Ballet, Punk Rockers Otto & Astrid, and Aussie legend (and the favorite) Reuben Kaye.
These shows just scratch the surface of the festival, but we feel it is a wonderful place to start! For those of you whose curiosity has been stitched by this article, it is certainly not too late to make benefits 2023 part of your summer plans. Tickets are still available to buy for productions (ticket purchases at the last minute, even the purchases of the day, occur frequently). We acknowledge, hotels can become expensive like you near August. But the fringe benefits can be done for travelers on any budget, with creative accommodation such as camping in public parks, residences and student housing.
We see you at the benefits!
