The Maine-based program offers a week of writing and community with feedback sessions, a recording studio and more resources.

More than 30 new musicals created by 60 writers are being developed this summer at the 2025 Drama Club Camp Writer Residencies in Mount Vernon, Maine. The free program connects writing teams from four to six new musicals as a cohort for a week of writing and community surrounded by two lakes, miles of natural routes, writing huts and a new recording studio.

Writers get resources to develop their new musicals, including cooks-made meals and a community of supporting artists. Nightly Group eaters are followed by sessions where artists can receive feedback on their work.

“The artists of this year are just as talented as diverse,” the founder and artistic director Shannon Morrison said in a statement. “They are working on traditional musical theater and experimental work. I couldn’t be more excited to host them at camp while pushing their pieces further. Campers in 2025 include Multiple Larson Award, Rodgers Award and the Loewe Award winners, former O’Neill NMTC participants, Alumni of the Johnny Vrove, and before academics. 31% are people of color … This is only our second year of writers’ houses, and I am amazed at the top talent in this year’s campers.

“The submissions of this year were out of the maps,” added co-founder and executive producer Scott Ihrig. “We had so many applications from around the world that we added two more cohorts in 2025 to increase capacity by 40%.”
