Apple gives Tata iPhone and MacBook repair business in India as partnership | Mint
Bengaluru: Apple brought Tata Group to handle repairs for iPhones and MacBook devices in its fast-growing Indian market, indicating the deepening role of the Indian Conglomerate in the US technical giant’s supply chain, two people who are familiar with the case said. While Apple is looking beyond China for manufacturing, Tata has quickly emerged as the most important supplier and already compiles iPhones for local and foreign markets at three facilities in South India, and one of them also makes some iPhone components. In its latest partnership expansion, Tata takes over the mandate of an Indian unit of Taiwan’s Wistron, ICT service management solutions, and will perform such nasal repairs from his Karnataka iPhone mounting campus, both sources said. iPhone sales to raise the repairs market The market for repairs goes only in India, the world’s second largest smartphone market, such as iPhone sales. Counterpoint research estimates about 11 million iPhones were sold in India last year, giving Apple a 7% market share compared to just 1% in 2020. “Tata’s deepening partnership with Apple can also pave the foundation for Apple that sells directly refurbished devices in India, such as how it is currently in the United States,” says Prabhu Ram, a vice president of CyberMediarearch. The takeover of ICT by Tata is currently underway, according to both sources, who refused to be mentioned because they were not authorized to talk about the matter. Apple and Wistron did not respond to requests for comment, while a spokesman for Tata refused to comment. While Apple’s official service centers across India can do basic repairs, they will now send telephones and laptops to Tata’s facility for more complicated issues. However, Wistron’s ICT will continue to serve other customers, who excluded Apple, said one of the sources. Amid an imminent threat from US President Donald Trump’s rates on China, India is also appearing as a favorable destination for iPhone exports. Apple CEO Tim Cook said most of iPhones sold in the United States during June will be made at factories in India.
