Technical entrepreneur Matias Travizano dies to 2,000 feet as he drops Mount Shasta in California
A 45-year-old technical entrepreneur and scholar, Matias Augusto Travizano, died after falling nearly 2000 feet while dropping Mount Shasta in northern California. According to Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, Travizano was part of a group of three climbers who reached the 14,000-foot-top of the Stratovolcano on September 12. The group started their descent via the Clear Creek route, but two climbers lost their way and stranded on an ice skin on the ice cube on the Wintun Glacier. Authorities said Travizano tried to slide down the icy slope to reach safer ground, but lost control. He hits a rock of about 300 feet below, which hit him unconscious. A fellow climber tried to reach him, but could not close the distance until he regained consciousness. ‘Mr. Travizano regained consciousness and began to move, ‘the sheriff’s office said. “Tragically, this movement discharged him from the rock and he slid the rest of the glacier and out of sight.” The third climber raised the alarm, and deputy responded to the scene about 2:27 pm search and rescue teams found the mountain with land and air. After a few hours, Travizano’s body was discovered at an altitude of about 10,200 feet near the base of the glacier. The authorities confirmed that he had fallen almost 2000 feet from his last known position.
