Government content holders increase the protection of the management of fisheries

Jakarta – The Ministry of Manpower (Kemenaker) along with ministries/institutions related to the support of the International Labor Organization (ILO) has again set a commitment to promote the rights of domestic and migrant fisheries. Manpower Minister Yassierli hopes that the leadership of K/L and stakeholders and ILOs can unite perceptions and formulate mutual agreements to encourage the preparation process of ratifying the ILO Convention 188 of 2007 regarding work in fisheries. “This meeting is expected to be a catalyst, as well as a tangible form of commitment from stakeholders to encourage improvement in protecting fisheries management in Indonesia,” Yassierli said in a written statement on Tuesday (30/9/2025). Yassierli said the government could provide better protection for fishing workers, including occupational safety, accommodation, food, decent wages and protecting social security with the ratification of the ILO 188 convention. “The ratification of the ILO 188 Convention also offers benefits for Indonesia, namely the competitiveness of Indonesian fisheries, because Indonesia increases the protection standards for ABK or fishermen. So that it will affect a positive image in the global market and are expected to encourage investment,” he said. Yassierli said that with the compliance of ILO standards is expected to provide certainty that all fisheries supply chains, ranging from upstream to downstream, meet quality and sustainable standards, which are added value to the competitiveness of Indonesian products in the international market. Yassierli added that maritime work or fisheries are known as dirty, difficult and dangerous and threatening deaths (dirty, difficult, dangerous and deadly/4D).
