Patrick Hermini is the new president of Seychelles, Premier Modi congratulated
New -delhi, October 12 (IANS). Dr. Patrick Hermini won the presidential election in Seychelles. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Patrick on his victory. Through a social media post, Prime Minister Modi referred to the long-term relations between India and Seychelles and expressed confidence in further strengthening bilateral relations under Hermine’s leadership. Prime Minister Modi wrote on Twitter, “Congratulations to Dr. Patrick Herny on his victory in the Seychelle presidential election. The Indian Ocean is our general heritage and cherishes the aspirations and needs of our people. Hermini, the candidate of Seychelle’s biggest opposition party United Seychelle and former National Assembly speaker, won the hot disputed second round of the election and defeated established President Wavel Ramkalawan. The election results were released on Sunday morning. According to official results, Hermini received 52.7 percent of the votes, while Ramkalawan received 47.3 percent. The election is a significant political shift in the island nation, where Hermini promised to focus on national unity, economic revival and strengthening regional partnerships. India and Seychelles have historically had strong diplomatic and strategic relations, including collaboration in areas such as maritime safety, development projects and capacity building. After winning the election, Herminie said: “I was deeply humiliated by the trust saved by the people in me, and it is with gratitude, dedication and unwavering faith in the power and character of the people of Seychelles that I formally accept this mandate.” Herminie was the president of the National Assembly of Seychelles from 2007 to 2016. According to the Constitution, the tenure of the president is five years. The candidate who receives more than half of the votes in the first round is declared the winner.
