Tensions have risen between Washington and Beijing ahead of his expected meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the next 14 days. Days after Trump claimed there was “no reason” to meet Xi, Trump confirmed the meeting will take place, signaling a possible easing of trade tensions between the two countries. Trump, who last week announced 100 percent tariffs on all Chinese imports, acknowledged in an interview with Fox Business that such a move could not continue indefinitely. Asked about the tariff measures introduced by both countries this year, he said: “It’s not sustainable, but the numbers are – it can be sustained, but they forced me to do it.” He said he hoped things would be “okay” with China after his meeting with Xi. ‘China is always looking for an edge’ During the interview, Trump said: “China is always looking for an edge. I don’t know what’s going to happen. We’ll see what happens.” The trade dispute between the two countries has raised US import duties on Chinese goods to 145 percent, raising fears of a global economic recession. However, both sides have agreed to a multiple 90-day ceasefire, which will expire on November 10 unless extended. ‘We have to make a fair deal’ Last week, Trump threatened to introduce additional tariffs by November 1 and also considered canceling a meeting with Xi Jinping, scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea later this month. Trump said of Xi Jinping: “I have a good relationship with him. I think our relationship with China will be good, but we have to make a fair deal. It has to be fair.” Asked about the possibility of a trade war with China if no deal is reached, Trump said: “Look, now you’re in a war. We have 100 percent tariffs. If we didn’t have tariffs, we’d be nothing.” About the Author Rakesh Ranjan Kumar Rakesh Ranjan Kumar has over 10 years of experience in digital journalism.
