The story of Grandpa Subari once being scolded by a motorcyclist for putting a snake on the pavement
Jakarta – Grandfather Subari, 75, went viral after placing his pet snake on the pavement to stop ‘naughty’ motorbikes from passing by. Even though many people supported his actions, Subari admitted that he was taunted by motorcycle drivers. “There were (angry motorbikes). Most of them shouted, ‘Wow, what is this snake’? They shouted like that. From afar, those who came down (the street), those who were scared, shouted,” Subari said when detikcom met at his home, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, on Saturday (18/10/2025). He said that bikers who wanted to make Subari viral are considered to have taken away the snake’s freedom. “There used to be. It used to be thought that it would disrupt the lives of animals. I wanted to make it viral first. In the past, people wanted to make it viral, it would disrupt the lives of animals,” Subari explained. Even though he had to receive insults and threats from a number of bikers who didn’t like his actions, Subari didn’t mind. All he wants is to protect the rights of pedestrians impounded by motorcycles. “Because it’s like that, when there’s a traffic jam, people (motorcycles) don’t want to go down, they want to go up quickly. Then I put a hose. Yes, (motorcycles riding on the pavement) disturb the residents,” he said. Confidence that what he is doing is right is also strengthened by residents’ assessments. Subari admitted that residents in his neighborhood supported his actions to prevent motorcycles from passing on the sidewalk. “(The environment) doesn’t matter. People don’t protest. It’s already known. Everyone already knows,” Subari said. Residents consider Subari’s actions to be effective. Grandfather Subari’s (75) actions were in the spotlight because he dared to place a large python on the pavement to prevent ‘unruly’ motorbikes still using pedestrian access in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta. Subari’s actions appear to be effective. A resident, Anwar, said when Subari’s python appeared, no motorbike dared to pass on the pavement when the traffic was jammed. According to him, the size of Subari’s large python made motorcyclists think about crossing it on the pavement. “Yes, when the snake was placed there, no one passed by. I was afraid that if the snake was placed there, it would be really big,” Anwar said when detikcom met at the location, Saturday (18/10). Anwar said motorbikes often pass on the pavement when the main road is congested. The traffic jam was caused by the narrowing of the road due to an excavation project on Jalan Haji Bokir bin Djiun, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta. “If there’s a traffic jam, yes (the motorbike goes up to the pavement). Here, when you come back to work, it’s stuck, so motorbikes just go up,” Anwar explains. (zap/zap)
