Shafiq-Masood's half century against South Africa, Pakistan lost 5 wickets on the first day

New Delhi, October 20 (IANS). Pakistan scored 259 runs after losing 5 wickets on the opening day of the second Test against South Africa in Rawalpindi. Until the first day’s play, opener Abdullah Shafiq and captain Shan Masood played half-century innings. After the Pakistan captain won the toss in the match on Monday, he decided to bat. As the opening pair, Abdullah Shafiq and Imam-ul-Haq scored 35 runs for the first wicket. Imam returned to the pavilion after scoring 17 runs in 35 balls. From here, Shafiq took over the Pakistani innings through a 111-run partnership for the second wicket with captain Masood. Abdullah Shafiq scored 146 balls and scored 57 runs. His innings included 4 fours. Babar Azam came to bat at number four but could not add more than 16 runs to the team’s account. Pakistan team lost 4 wickets to the score of 212. From here Masood added 45 runs along with Saud Shakeel and took the team past 200. Captain Masood scored 87 runs with 3 sixes and 2 fours. By the end of the first day, Saud Shakeel remained unbeaten on 42, while Salman Agha remained unbeaten on 10 runs. From the opposition team, Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer took 2 wickets each, while Kagiso Rabada took 1 wicket. Pakistan won the first match of the series against South Africa in Lahore by 93 runs. The home team took a 1-0 lead in the two-game series. In such a situation, South Africa will try to level the series 1-1 by winning the ongoing second Test in Rawalpindi. After the Test series, both the countries will play a series of three T20 and as many ODIs.
