Shekhpura Assembly seat: RJD wins for first time in 2020, will JDU make a comeback this time?
Patna, October 22 (IANS). Sheikhpura meetings of Sheikhpura district of Bihar is again ready for an interesting competition this time. Here JDU has fielded Randhir Kumar Soni, RJD for Vijay Yadav and Janswaraj Party for Rajesh Kumar. A total of 9 candidates are in the fray, but the main battle is apparently between these three parties. Shekhpura assemblage consists of Ariari, Chevada and Ghatkusumbha blocks. The district came into existence in 1994 by splitting from Munger and is the smallest district of Bihar. Bounded by Nalanda and Patna in the north, Nawada and Jamui in the south, Lakhisarai in the east and Nalanda and Nawada districts in the west, this area is geographically flat. There are some small hills in the southern part and most of the farmers depend on monsoon as there is no adequate irrigation facility. Agriculture is the main livelihood here, along with small industries such as mining and stone crushers are also a source of local employment. The history of Shekhpura is also rich and ancient. Bhima is said to have married Hidimba here during the Mahabharata period and their son Ghatotkacha was born. Evidence related to this historical story can still be seen in ‘Girihinda’ village. Apart from this, Shekhpura also has its own identity from the cultural point of view. This district was once a part of the Magadha Empire and even today retains the cultural traditions of Magadha. Here a shop named ‘Famous Tailor’ has become a local identity, which is located in Chandni Chowk, Sheikhpura. Seen from political point of view, Shekhpura assembly was once a strong stronghold of Congress. So far, Congress has won here 12 times, while CPI has won 3 times, JDU has won 2 times and RJD has won 1 time. The first Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Krishna Singh became an MLA from this seat in 1957. Congress leader Rajo Singh served from here for five consecutive terms (1967–1995), and his son Sanjay Singh reached the assembly twice. In the 2020 elections, RJD candidate Vijay Yadav hoisted the RJD flag on this seat for the first time. If we talk about caste equations, the influence of Yadav voters on this seat is considered crucial. After them, Kurmi and Bhumihar communities also play an important role. –IANS DCH/DSC Share this story Tags
