West Bengal: Accused who broke idol of Kali Mata arrested
South 24 Parganas, October 23 (IANS). The situation in North Chandannagar under Harwood Point Coastal police station area of South 24 Parganas in West Bengal turned tense on Wednesday when the idol of Kali Mata was found broken in a local temple. This incident caused great anger among the local residents and they started protesting. The police arrested the person who destroyed the statue. As soon as the information about the destruction of the idol of Kali Mata was received, the local people got angry and took to the streets and blocked the National Highway-117. Meanwhile, the protesters started protesting by placing the broken statue in the middle of the road, due to which the traffic system was completely disrupted. As soon as the information was received, the police and administration reached the place. Due to the congestion of NH-117, many essential service vehicles including ambulances were also stuck in the congestion. In no time there was a long traffic jam on the NH. Police officers repeatedly asked the protesters to move away from the highway, but the crowd pelted them with stones. After that, the police used force to clear the crowd and took the broken idol into their custody and took it to a safe place. Sundarban Superintendent of Police Koteswara Rao said in a press conference that the Harwood Point Coastal Police, who acted swiftly in connection with the vandalism, arrested Narayan Halder, a resident of the same area. The superintendent of police said that during interrogation, accused Haldar admitted that he had broken the idol while under the influence of liquor. The police are also investigating whether other people were involved in this incident or not. For this, CCTV footage is thoroughly examined. He further said that the police administration has made it clear that this incident has no political connection. SP Koteswara Rao appealed to the public not to spread wrong information or rumors about this matter on social media as some people are trying to misuse the issue for personal gain.
