Tight security in the city of Oyo while new Alaafin throne rises

The new Alaaf of Oyo, Oba Akem Owoade, is officially crowned on Saturday, three years after the last resident of the throne, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, died. Prince Akem Owoade, who was born 49 years ago to the Owoade-Agunloye family in Oyo Town, is one of the surviving children of father Rasaki Ibiyosi Owade, the descendant of Aremo Avenmu Iyanda Owoade, Agure Compound, Oyo Town. In January, Governor Seyi Makinde appointed him the 46th monarch of the ancient city and submitted an appointment certificate. The appointment was the end of a prolonged and controversial selection process to the highly reverent Yoruba throne, but also opened a new chapter of litigations that challenged the choice of Makinde. Saharan Porters reported on March 7 that the monarch imposed a 21-day predisposition in the Oyo City in the Oyo State, before his coronation. In a statement issued by the prominent Monarch’s office, it is said that the traditional rites of 21 days, known as “Oro Ipebi”, began on Friday night and concluded on Saturday, March 29, 2025. The statement added that an lead would be imposed within the township from 20:00 to 06:00. After completing the traditional rituals, the Coronation Ceremony for Oba Owoade would take place on Saturday, April 5, 2025, in Oyo Town. Saharan Porters reported earlier that the governor of the Oyo, Seyi Makinde, the staff and the officer formally submitted to Prince Akem Abimbola Owoade, who was his official ascension as the 46th Alausin of Oyo. The ceremony, held in the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, celebrated the enchantment of Oba Owoade as the new custodian of the rich history and traditions of the Oyo Kingdom. In his speech, Governor Makinde underlined the importance of the Alafin as a symbol of unity and cultural heritage, which expressed confidence in Oba Owoade’s leadership.
