More than 110 people have been arrested in connection with the violence that broke out in the Murshidabad district in Western Bengals during a protest march over the WAQF (Amendment Act), police said on Saturday. Violence beat Malda, Murshidabad, South 24 Parganas and Hooghly Districts on Friday during protests on the Center Act on the Center Act. Several vehicles, including police wagons, were set on fire, stones were thrown at security forces and roads were blocked. “There are attacks in all these districts, arrested with more than 110 in Murshidabad,” police quoted by PTI. They added: “About 70 people were arrested from Suti, and 41 people from Samserganj in connection with the violence.” According to officials, the situation in the violent places remained tense on Saturday morning, but no unforeseen incident was reported. WAQF (Amendment Act) Act on the WAQF (amendment) Bill was submitted to the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on April 2 and 3 respectively. It was approved in both houses and later received the president’s consent, after which it became a law. On April 5, President Droupadi Murmu gave her permission for the WAQF (amendment) Bill, 2025.
