Dr. Stephen Williams, the famous cardiologist, warned of the danger of the inert lifestyle, stressing that sitting for long periods without movement can be harmful to health in the same way that smoking affects, describing this behavior as a “new smoking lifestyle”, warning of the health consequences that may result.

Dr. Williams explained during his speech: “Continuous sitting leads to chronic health problems such as weight gain, high blood pressure, and heart health disorders.”

He added that many of us spend long hours behind work offices or in front of the screens, which made this method of life negatively affect the health of the heart and blood vessels.

The doctor also pointed out that the work offices that allow standing are not a complete solution, but rather a step to stimulate the movement of the body, but standing alone does not compensate for the need for continuous action.

He focused on the fact that physical activity is the basis for improving public health, as it contributes to improving the level of cholesterol, strengthening bone, lowering blood pressure, and reducing infections, which helps in maintaining heart health.

For his part, Ben Greenfield, a biological expert in physical fitness, added that sitting for long periods exceeds 60 to 90 minutes harmful to the body, regardless of the position, whether it is sitting or standing, and explained: “The important thing is the continuous movement, and you can simply raise your heart rate for 10-15 minutes twice a day to achieve noticeable health benefits.”

With regard to the high physical activity, Greenfield advised to monitor the heart rate during the activity, as it should be within the range of 50-70% of the maximum, which is calculated by offering life from the number 220.

Finally, the experts stressed the need to move at least every 30 minutes, stressing that walking is considered one of the easiest and simplest ways of physical activity that contributes to improving public health and reducing stress and anxiety.
