21.219 Farmers have committed suicide for the past 24 years in five districts under the Amravati income division in Maharashtra. This information is given in an official report. The report said that the figure was due to deaths in the districts of Amravati, Akola, Buldhana, Washim and Yavatmal between January 2001 and January 2025. This includes 80 farmers suicide in January this year. The report said that 5.395 farmers had committed suicide during the past 24 years in the Amravati district, 3.123 in the Akola district, 6.211 in the Yavatmal district, 4.442 farmers in the Buldhana district and 2.048 in the Washim district. In January 2025, 10 farmers committed suicide in the Amravati district, 10 in Akola, 34 in Yavatmal, 10 in Buldhana and seven in the Washim district. The report said that 9.970 cases of total suicide (for government remuneration) would be eligible in 24 years, 10.963 were not eligible, while 319 was hanging for investigation. The report said that assistance was provided in 9,740 cases. According to the existing criteria, only a few suicide is eligible for compensation – it also includes that this law is the result of not repetition, crop loss and not for personal reasons. Ajit Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, asked officials on Thursday (April 3) to formulate a comprehensive law to protect the interests of sugarcane farmers and sugarcane cutters. Pawar, who held the Finance Department in the Fadnavis government, said such a law would prevent farmers, sugar cane cutters and laborers of the area to be cheated by supervisors, carriers and mill officials. The statement issued from Pawar’s office said: “Currently contract Sugarcane Mills with supervisors to provide sugarcane machines, for which rupees are paid. But supervisor does not follow the rules.
