Indian company Adani Power and Bhutan’s state-run utility function print Green Power Corporation (DGPC) signed an agreement to set up a 570 MW hydro project involving £ 6,000 in the Himalayan kingdom, according to an Ani report. The agreement, signed in Delhi, will see Adani Power and Press Green that the River River Wangchhu hydroelectric project is building on a boat (build, own, industry, transfer) model. A power purchase agreement (PPA) and a concession agreement were also signed in the presence of Prime Minister of Bhutan, Dasher Tshering Tobgay and Gautam Adani, chairman, Adani Group, added the report. Bhutan Hydro Project: What we know … The Wangchhu project will see an investment of around £ 6,000 in the construction of the power station and related infrastructure. With the detailed project report already completed, the construction work is expected to start by the first half of 2026, and the completion is targeted to pioneers within five years. “The Wangchhu hydro -electric project will critically meet Bhutan’s highlight in winter question, when the Hydro power generation is low. During the summer months it would export power to India,” said CEO SB Khyalia. The Wangchhu is the first hydroelectric project recorded under a sleeve signed in May 2025 between Adani Group and DGPC for the development of 5000 MW water power in Bhutan. Adani Group and DGPC are making further discussions for future projects under this strategic partnership. Adani Power is the largest private thermal power producer in India. DGPC is the only generation utility of Bhutan with a current generation portfolio of a little over 2500 MW and grows rapidly with Bhutan’s quest to achieve 25,000 MW in generation capacity by 2040. Pressure Holding & Investments, the commercial arm of the royal government of Bhutan, is the DGPC shareholder. It was established in 2008 to take a starring role in the development of Bhutan’s hydropower sources, and it has also recently diversified beyond water power in the weakening of solar sources.
