Supreme Court New -Delhi. The Supreme Court aimed to hold elections of all local bodies in Maharashtra by January 31, 2026 as a one -time franchise. After this, no more detail will be given. The Apex Court also ordered on Tuesday that the demarcation should be completed by October 31, 2025 and that it could not be made the basis to postpone elections. A Bank of Justices Suryakant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi expressed dissatisfaction with the slow actions of the State Electoral Commission (SEC) in accordance with the preceding order given on May 6. The Supreme Court has made it clear that the election of Zilla Parishad, Panchayat Committees and all municipalities is mandatory to be held by 31.01.2026. The State Election Commission explained the lack of EVMs, the unavailability of schools due to the council investigation, and delay in the deployment of employees. The court said that the council exams to be held in March 2026 could not be the basis for the postponement of elections and that SEC did not follow the instructions on time. The Supreme Court’s decision welcomed the BJP leader and former minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, said: “The Supreme Court has given a clear order to the Maharashtra government and the State Election Commission to hold local body election by January 31, 2026. Our government is fully ready in this direction.” He assured that the government would hold elections in time after the court’s instructions. At the same time, the Samajwadi party president and MLA Abu Azmi called this decision as historical. He said: “Local body elections have not been held over the past four years, which collapses the civil system. A lack of funds and corruption is increasing due to the random of the officials. This High Court decision is welcome. Azmi also claimed that the court had earlier instructed to hold elections soon, but this could not happen due to manipulation and delay. I demand that the court’s instructions be followed immediately. Congress -LP Varsha Gaikwad also supported the Supreme Court decision. He said: “Corporation elections have not been held in Mumbai for the past three-four years, which influenced the administrative system. This Supreme Court decision will strengthen democracy. We welcome it and hope that elections will be held with full transparency.” Gaikwad, referring to the earlier court instructions, said that the public’s confidence was repeatedly reduced. This Supreme Court’s assignment is an important step over the prolonged local body election in Maharashtra. Let us tell you that the Supreme Court in respect of the local body election in Maharashtra made it clear that the date of election will not be allowed and that all the procedures must be completed within the deadline for this. The State Election Commission was ordered to hand over the list to the general secretary within two weeks, so there is no delay in preparing for the election.
