Amazon Launches ‘Amelia’ AI Smart Glasses to Increase Delivery Efficiency

Amazon has unveiled a prototype of its AI-powered smart glasses designed specifically for its delivery drivers as part of its efforts to improve efficiency. Called “Amelia,” these glasses have a built-in camera and a heads-up display connected to a controller worn in the driver’s jacket with a button to capture proof of deliveries. With this, Amazon aims to simplify the delivery process by reducing the need for drivers to constantly check their phones or package labels. The glasses also provide turn-by-turn walking directions, which are especially useful in complex locations such as gated business complexes and multi-unit apartments. They show which package needs to be delivered and where exactly, so drivers can focus on the route and package handling without any distractions or checking every minute in the smartphone. The AI-powered device uses computer vision to identify the driver’s surroundings and can alert them to potential dangers in real time. Another important aspect of the glasses is their design to support prescription lenses and transition lenses that automatically adjust to light, ensuring comfort for drivers during long shifts outside. The glasses automatically activate as soon as a driver parks at the delivery location and help navigate in and around delivery locations. Amazon is currently testing these glasses with delivery drivers in North America, and is working closely with partners and drivers to refine the technology before a global rollout. These glasses are part of a broader initiative that includes new warehouse robots and AI tools designed to improve productivity in the warehouse and delivery system. Unlike Meta or Google, whose smart glasses target general consumers, Amazon’s Amelia glasses are focused solely on improving its logistics workforce’s productivity and safety. Future versions are expected to add features such as real-time defect detection to alert drivers if a package is misdelivered. This innovation can significantly speed up deliveries, save valuable time and improve the drivers’ experience
