State-owned Nhai said on Monday that it imposed a £ 20 Lakh fine on the Bhuni Toll Plaza toll collection agency in MeerUT, where an army soldier was assaulted by toll staff. This condemned the behavior of the Toll Plaza staff and said it was committed to securing safe and seamless journey on national highways. “Strict steps on the incident of misconduct with army staff by toll staff deployed on the Bhuni Toll Plaza on the Meerut-Karnal section of NH-709A on August 17, 2025, where a verbal interaction between an army staff and toll staff escalated into a fight,” the statement said. The incident happened on the Bhuni Toll Plaza in the Sarurpur area on Sunday when Kapil, a soldier of Gotka Village, was on his way to Delhi airport. His car stuck in a long range of vehicles on the Toll Plaza. Kapil requested the Toll Plaza employees to move the vehicles quickly, resulting in a break. When the argument increased, the Toll Plaza employees stepped on. Police have registered a fir and arrested six people in connection with the assault case. Superintendent of police (rural) Rakesh Kumar Mishra said six accused were arrested on the basis of CCTV footage, and efforts were made to locate the other. “The Nhai imposed a £ 20 Lakh fine on the Tol collection agency, M/S Dharam Singh, in light of the serious violation of the contract agreement for the failure of the agency to manage the situation and secure staff,” the statement said. The Nhai also began the process of ending the toll collection firm and upset from future participation in Toll Plaza bid. The incident caused anger among the residents who stormed the toll and vandalized property after the video of the Army soldier was assaulted by the Bhuni Toll Plaza employees on social media.
