An alternative to crackers will have to be found, breathing problems have increased in patients of all ages: Dr. M. Wali
New Delhi, October 21 (IANS). After Diwali, the air of Delhi-NCR worsened again. The increasing level of pollution has a direct impact on the health of the people. IANS had a special discussion on this issue with Professor Dr. M. Wali, Senior Consultant, Department of Medicine, Sir Gangaram Hospital. He expressed concern and said we need to find an alternative to fireworks. Dr. Wali said that air pollution increases rapidly every year during Diwali. This time, even though the burning of green biscuits was allowed, there was no significant improvement in air quality. I think some alternative to crackers will have to be found now, so that people don’t face problems due to the smoke and gases that come from them. Change will not come only by making rules, but only by people’s awareness. He said that around and after Diwali, the number of patients in hospitals with complaints such as difficulty breathing, sore throat, fever, chills and burning sensation in the eyes increases rapidly. For the last few days, people of all ages have been coming to me, some have sore throats, some have trouble breathing, some have chest pains, and some have watery eyes all the time. He also said that patients suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and asthma are the most affected. Due to pollution, problems like shortness of breath, risk of heart attack and fatigue become common in these patients. Remain vigilant until air quality improves. People should leave the house less these days. If it is necessary to go out, then wear a mask. Drink lukewarm water, take steam, gargle and avoid fried foods. He advised people who do morning walks or outdoor exercises to avoid it for a few days. The level of pollution in the air is highest in the morning, so going out at that time can be dangerous to health. –IANS PSK/ABM Share this story Tags
