Bangladesh: National Consensus Commission has withdrawn the plan to form “National Council of Constitution”, proposal of the new committee

Dhaka, June 25 (IANS). Bangladesh National Consensus Commission (NCC) announced the withdrawal of the proposed scheme on Wednesday to form the National Council of Constitution (NCC). In place, it has now been proposed to form a “appointment committee of constitutional and statutory institutions” (CSIAC). This information was given by local media reports. NCC vice president Ali Riyaz made this statement following discussion with political parties at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka. He said that the NCC withdrew the proposal for the formation of the Constitution Board to give the priority to the opinion of political parties. According to reports, the proposed new committee will not include the president and chief justice. The committee will be of seven members and will be the chairman of the chairman (Speaker) Committee of the Lower House. The proposed Constitutional Board (NCC) was previously opposed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The GNP said that this council would weaken the rights of the executive and in the absence of liability, power could be abused. Salauddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP standing committee, told Pratheom Alo: “If an institution gets extensive constitutional rights, but it is not liable, we cannot support it as a Democratic party. Such an institution can deter the balance of power.” On the other hand, the Radical Islamic Party James-E-Islami supported the Constitutional Council, but advised the president and Chief Justice to remove from the council. Some other parties have also suggested an alternative name and structure for this. Ali Riyaz on Wednesday called on political parties to show flexibility and cooperation on reforms. He said: “Please consider how we can all continue to keep the national interest of the utmost importance. I have already said that everyone should have a compromise on our respective parties.” Earlier this month, the NCC met chaired by Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus, in which ‘immediate need’ was agreed to hold elections on time. -Ians DSC/EKD shares this story -tags
