Bangladesh's Movement to Islamic Mob Rule a Matter of Concern for Western Countries: Report
Dhaka, October 16 (IANS). Mohammad Yunus, chief adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, is leading the country into ‘Islamic mobocracy’, while Western countries praise his efforts to restore democracy. This claim was made in a report on Thursday. It further said that the mysterious death of a US special forces officer last month at the Westin Hotel in Dhaka and the recent terror threat targeting the US embassy should serve as a warning to Western countries about the horrific developments taking place in Bangladesh before it is too late. A report in ‘Eurasia Review’ detailed: “This week’s warning of an imminent terrorist attack by the US embassy in Dhaka has sharply highlighted the resurgence of Islamic fundamentalism in Bangladesh, which the West has so far ignored. US diplomats have shared details of three possible Islamic radicals planning to attack the embassy.” According to the report, the Bangladeshi police, which has deployed its special units, special weapons and tactics (SWAT) to protect the US embassy, is keeping mum on the identity of the suspects. It highlighted that the Yunus-led interim government had released dozens of convicted Islamist terrorists from prison since taking power in August last year. The report said: “For all his popularity as a micro-credit guru in the West, Yunus was completely dependent on Islamic fundamentalist parties such as Jamaat-e-Islami to keep his interim government going. Jamaat-e-Islami was banned during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, and said its policy of a Sharia-based Islamic state was quickly removed against Bangladesh, but the secular state of Islam was quickly removed. away The worst is that the Yunus administration has released dozens of convicted Islamic terrorists from prisons, who are now walking free.” It said: “Symbolically, hundreds of Yunus supporters tore down statues of police officers who died fighting Islamic fundamentalists during the terrorist attack on the Holi Artisan Bakery in Dhaka in July 2016. The police remained mute spectators while the Islamist crowd celebrated the slain terrorists as heroes.” The report highlights how the Yunus government has now implicated 25 military officers who played a key role in the fight against terrorism during the tenure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina – accusing them of “serious human rights violations” and planning to prosecute them under the International Criminal Tribunal. It claims, “Yunus turned Bangladesh into a living prison, where thousands of Awami League workers and leaders were jailed on largely fabricated charges, while many convicted Islamic radicals were released from prison.” –IANS DKP/
