The producers of the 2022-2023 Broadway revival of August Wilson‘ The piano lesson announced on March 19 that production has recovered its original investment.

Last season, the limited involvement was the revival of a play on Broadway, which performed in the Ethel Barrymore Theater on September 19, 2023, 2023.

Producer Brian Anthony Moreland said in a statement: “We are very grateful to Latanya Richardson Jackson for her simple vision. Her ability to expose the masterpiece of Wilson so live to a whole new generation of theater love is what made this production a hit.

Additional details regarding the story have not yet been revealed.

Jackson (who received a Tony nomination for his actions) as Doaker Charles, John David Washington Like Son Willie, Danielle Brooks Like Bernter, Trai byers Like Avery, Ray Fisher and Lymon, April Matthis as grace, Michael Potts as winning boy, and Nadia Daniel and Jury Swan As Maretha at alternating performances.

The creative team also included the Tony-winning music director Jason Michael Webb (who composed new music for the revival), Tony-Award-winning set designer Beowulf borittTony-nominated costume designer Toni-Leslie JamesTony-nominated lighting designer JAPHY WEIDEMANTony-winning sound designer Scott teacherDrama-desk-nominated wig designer Cookie jordanTony-winning projection designer Jeff Snug, and Choreographer Otis scarves. Cast was by Calleri Jensen Davis with general management by Foresight theater.

After closing, The piano lesson‘s titular prop is on his way to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, where It became a permanent resident. The piano was designed by scenic designer Boritt and was built at BB Props in Little Falls, New York.

The revival was also included on the Lincoln Center Theater on Film and Band Archives on January 26.

Wilson’s play made his world premiere in the Yale repertory theater in 1987 with Samuel L. Jackson as son Willie. In 1990, the play was staged at the Goodman Theater in Chicago and then transferred to the Walter Kerr theater of Broadway. The Pulitzer-winning drama received 1990 Tony nominations for best play, the best direction of a play, the best actor in a play, best actor in a play and the best actress in a play.

The 2022 revival was produced by Brian Anthony Moreland, Sonia Friedman, Tom Kirdahy, Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker.
