Bihar -election: exciting power play on Goriyakothi seat

Patna, October 14 (IANS). Goriyakothi Assembly Seat of Bihar is of general category. It offers an interesting mix of politics, history and folk life. This seat falls into the Siwan district and is one of the six constituencies of the meeting under the Maharajganj Lok Sabha seat. In the year 2010, it was newly formed by the merger of Basantpur and Lakdi Nabiganj with Goriyakothi block, after which this area became more powerful. The history of Goriyakothi goes back to British rule. It is believed that there was a bungalow of an English indigo dealer, income officer or a senior officer from the district at the time. Local people started calling it Goriya Ka Kothi, who eventually became famous as Goriyakothi. Goriyakothi Block headquarters is located about 35 kilometers east of the Siwan district’s headquarters. It is connected by road with towns such as Maharajganj, Basantpur and Lakdi Nabiganj, while the nearest major train station is Siwan. This area is completely rural and agriculture based. The fertile soil and climate here make agriculture the most important way of existence. Paddy, wheat and maize are the most important crops here, while sugarcane is also grown in some areas. However, there is no major industry in the area, making work and migration among the most important social issues today. The history of Goriyakothi was very interesting from the political point of view. Although the seat was reorganized in its current form in 2008 and the first election was held in 2010, it has been a constituency of the meeting since 1967. In the 11 elections in the meeting held before the restructuring, Congress won four times, BJP, Janata Dal and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) twice each, while the Democratic Congress once won. After 2010, this seat became the center of power between BJP and RJD. In 2010, Bhumendra Narayan Singh of BJP won. In 2015, Satyadev Prasad Singh of RJD caught the seat. While BJP’s Devesh Kant Singh returned and won in 2020. In the last one and a half decade, the balance of power in Goriyakothi has changed repeatedly, which has always been discussed politically. According to the data from the 2024 Electoral Commission, the total population of the constituency Goriyakothi is 5,76.015. This includes 2,93,564 men and 2,82,451 women. At the same time, the total number of voters is 3,40,332, which includes 1,76,468 men, 1,63,861 women and 3 third generations. The voters here come mainly from rural background, the issues of which are related to local issues such as farming, irrigation, roads, education and employment. The politics of the Goriyakothi meeting were about local issues and caste comparisons. Problems such as agricultural crisis, rural roads, education and youth migration become central issues in every election. -—IANS PSK/ABM
