Bihar election: Interesting story of changes and comparisons in Maharajganj

Patna, October 14 (IANS). Maharajganj meeting constituency in the Siwan district Bihar holds a special identity in the politics of the state. The area is part of the Maharajganj lure Sabha seat and has seen many up and downs in politics, society and the economy since the formation (1951). Maharajganj area is completely rural and agriculture. The country here is flat and exceptionally fertile, which is considered suitable for the cultivation of paddy, wheat and sugarcane. Gandak River, which flows about 36 kilometers from Maharajganj, is the backbone of the irrigation system of the surrounding towns. In addition, Rice Mills, brick oven and some small industries work on the locals and support the economy. The Town area of Maharajganjj subdivision serves as a business center for the surrounding rural areas. This area is well connected to Siwan, Chhapra and Gopalganj. The distance from the state’s capital Patna is about 133 kilometers, which is strategic importance from administrative and commercial point of view. Even today, basic issues such as agriculture, roads, irrigation and employment are at the forefront of the election agenda in Maharajganj. So far, 17 elections have been held in the Maharajganjies section. The history of this seat shows that there were repeated changes in power here, but the influence of some parties remained constant. Janata Dal (United) has won five times so far, including one win in 2000 in the name of the Samata party. The Congress and the Janata Party won this seat 3 times each. Apart from this, Janata Dal has had success twice. Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party, Swatantra Party, Praja Socialist Party and Bharatiya Kranti Dal won once. Interestingly, so far, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could not even achieve a single victory on this seat. JDU’s finish line was broken in the 2020 election. Actually, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) spoiled the comparisons by fielding candidates here. LJP cut votes and JDU suffered a direct loss as a result, which lost this seat. According to the data from the 2024 Electoral Commission, the population of the Maharajganj’s constituency is 5,25,485, of which men are 2,69,376 and women 2,56,109. At the same time, the total number of voters is 3,15,954. There are 1,63,771 men and 1,52,183 females. Voters here come mainly from rural backgrounds, with urban voters only 5.91 percent.
