Bihar: Police crack down on cyber thugs in Nawada, 5 criminals arrested, mobile phone and vehicle seized
Nawada, October 22 (IANS). Bihar Police has geared up to stop the rising cases of cyber crime. The team of cyber police station of Nawada raided Mirbigha village in Warsaliganj police station area and arrested five cyber criminals. 12 mobile phones, one motorcycle and three four-wheelers in the possession of the accused were seized. Cyber DSP Priya Jyoti said that this action was taken based on complaints registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (Pratibimba). This arrest is part of the special operation being conducted against cyber crime. In recent months, Nawada district has become a hotspot of cyber fraud, where cases of fraud worth lakhs of rupees have been reported in the name of Flipkart, Dhani Finance and other companies. In June 2025, 34 criminals were arrested under ‘Operation Fireball’, in which Rs 23 lakh was seized. Even after catching 8 thugs in January 2025, the criminals did not lose heart, but now the vigilance of the police caught them. The modus operandi of the arrested criminals was very clever. They called innocent people in the name of bank or office. One of the accused would say over the phone, “A deliveryman’s package has come to your house but your phone is not working. That’s why we are calling from the office. An OTP will come, tell us that, so that the goods can be delivered.” The victims would give the OTP, through which the crooks would log into their WhatsApp account. Then they would message or call all the WhatsApp groups and contacts of the victim and ask for money. “Your package is stuck at customs or it will be confiscated.” They would have collected thousands of rupees through similar threats. DSP Priya Jyoti said, “These criminals mainly targeted elderly and less educated people from rural areas. These numbers were traced in more than 20 complaints registered on the Prakharpan portal.” The arrested accused have been identified as Pankaj Kumar, son of Sureshwar Prasad, resident of Mirbigha village, Satish Kumar, son of Umesh Prasad, resident of Shekhupur Sarai in Shekhpura district, Kaushalendra Prasad, son of Krishna Prasad, Bharat Kumar, son of Sikandar B. Yandav. Prasad. The age of all is between 20 and 30 years. All of them were active at a temporary hideout near AT furnace of Mirbigha. Interrogation revealed that they are associated with cyber gangs of Sheikhpura and Gaya. Numbers related to more than 50 complaints were found in the seized mobile phones. –IANS SCH Share this story Tags
