Break: PSC appoints Agbonika as Edo Police Commissioner, Take him with the prevention of retaliation to Uromi Lynching
He takes over from CP Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin, who previously held the post, Ikechukwu Ani, PSC head of press and liaison on Thursday announced in a statement. The Police Service Commission (PSC) approved the appointment of Monday Agbonika, an officer of the police who mounted troop, as the new Police Commissioner (CP) for the Edo State. He takes over from CP Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin, who previously held the post, Ikechukwu Ani, PSC head of press and liaison on Thursday announced in a statement. Agbonika’s appointment was confirmed after a job interview at the Police Service Commission, which by chairman, Dig Hashimu Argungu (Rtd.), Together with Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, a retired judge of the Supreme Court, and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, the secretary of the commission. During the interview, the leadership of the PSC emphasized the urgency of the role of the new CP, which urged him to be proactive in lowering crime rates and to address security issues in the state quickly. The commission also emphasized that the importance of the recent murders in Edo has been tackled, including the brutal line of at least 16 northern hunters in the state – a tragic incident that has increased the fear of retaliation of violence. The PSC underlines that Agbonika’s actions regarding the suspects arrested in connection with the murders would be decisive in shaping his success in the role. He was also requested to investigate the recent murders in the state and remind them that his actions, or lack thereof, would play an important role in determining his success in the state. “You have to sit upright and also work to win the trust of the people, consult relevant stakeholders and always document every incident and action and make sure that those who need to be informed are properly informed about your actions,” the PSC leadership quoted to tell him. In light of the recent violent events, including the hunters’ line sting, which increased the tension in the region, the PSC Agbonica urged to ensure the safety of all citizens and prevent further clashes. In response, CP Agbonika ensured the PSC that it would maintain the rule of law and rely on the guidance of the inspector general of the police to perform his duties. He emphasizes his dedication to restoring peace and safety in the Edo State. Prior to this appointment, Agbonika served as the police commissioner for the mounted troop at Force Headquarters and during his 32 -year career he held several posts. His extensive experience spans operations, investigations, administration, public relations and department management. Agbonika’s previous roles include Commissioner of Police Communication (Operations), Deputy Commissioner of Interpol at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, and the commander of the area for different regions in Nigeria.
