BWF World Junior Championships: Tanvi Sharma lost in final, became the fifth Indian to win silver.

Guwahati, October 19 (IANS). Tanvi Sharma had to face defeat to second seed Anyapat Phichitprichasak of Thailand in the final of the women’s singles category of the BWF World Junior Championships. In the match played on Sunday, Tanvi was defeated by Phichitprichasak 15-7, 15-12. The game lasted for 28 minutes. Tanvi had to settle for a silver medal. Tanvi started cautiously in the opening match against Anyapat. She struggled to handle the Thai shuttler’s smart drop shots. She committed several unforced errors and fell behind 8-5. Anyapat took advantage of this advantage and easily won the first game. The second game also started in a similar fashion as Tanvi lost the first point with a wrong stroke. However, he soon found his rhythm and thrilled the home crowd by scoring five consecutive points. Anyapat scored three consecutive points, but Tanvi managed to maintain the three point lead until the middle of the match. However, his momentum could not last long. Due to several unforced errors, Anyapat tied the score at 8-8 and regained control. Despite Tanvi’s attempts to make a comeback, the Thai shuttler kept her composure and won the match. She became the fifth Indian and third woman shuttler to win a silver medal at the Junior World Championships. Apart from Tanvi, Saina won silver in 2006, Aparna Popat in 1996, Cyril Verma in 2015, and Shankar Muthusamy in 2022. Saina Nehwal is the only Indian to win a gold medal in this championship.
