Chance of heavy rain and thunderstorm for four days in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, October 19 (IANS). The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) Chennai has issued an alert predicting widespread rainfall over Tamil Nadu in the next four days following the formation of a low pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea. According to the RMC, a low pressure system is currently forming over the southern Andaman Sea and adjacent to the southeastern Bay of Bengal. It is likely to turn into a low pressure area by October 21 and move west-northwestward and gradually strengthen as it approaches Tamil Nadu coast. Hence, light to moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is likely over many parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Sunday. Heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places, especially in the hilly areas of Coimbatore district and Nilgiris, Erode, Tiruppur, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts. For Monday (October 20), the forecast indicates heavy rainfall at isolated places over Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Kallakurichi and parts of Coimbatore and Erode districts. There is a possibility of moderate rain in Madurai, Dindigul and Virudhunagar as well as in the Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal. Heavy rain is expected in some areas of Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and Puducherry-Karaikal on October 21. At the same time, the intensity of rain is likely to increase in the coastal and surrounding inland districts. Red alert has been issued for North Coast Tamil Nadu for October 22. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over districts including Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Villupuram and Ranipet. Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupattur and Vellore may also receive heavy rain. The sky in Chennai will be generally cloudy with light to moderate rain in some areas accompanied by thunder and lightning. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 28-29 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is likely to be around 25-26 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has warned fishermen not to go into the sea as there is a possibility of bad weather in the coming days. –IANS AX/AS
