Chennaiyin FC appoints Clifford Miranda as head coach

Chennai, October 18 (IANS). Chennaiyin FC appointed Clifford Miranda as its new head coach. This was announced by the team on Saturday. Miranda became the first Indian head coach of the club, replacing Owen Coyle. This is his first appointment as head coach in the AIFF Super Cup, which starts from October 25 in his home state of Goa. Chennaiyin have been placed in a tough group with fellow Indian Super League (ISL) teams Mohun Bagan Super Giants, East Bengal FC and Dempo SC, who will have the home advantage. Chennaiyin FC and Coyle parted ways earlier this year by mutual consent. Scottish manager Coyle has been one of the most successful players in the ISL, having previously won the ISL Shield with Jamshedpur FC. Now Clifford Miranda will try to change the fortunes of the club. The AIFF Super Cup is a good opportunity for him to make his mark. In the 2024–25 season, under the coaching of Coyle, Chennaiyin FC finished 11th with only seven wins from 24 matches. The former assistant coach of FC Goa, Odisha FC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Mumbai City FC will step into the position of head coach. Chennaiyin last won the silver medal in the ISL Cup Final in 2017-18 by defeating Bengaluru FC. The team has qualified for the ISL playoffs only once in the last five seasons. This coach has an illustrious history when it comes to the AIFF Super Cup, having won the tournament with Odisha FC as interim head coach in 2023. It is a feat he will look to repeat with his new club. 43-year-old Coyle has had an illustrious playing career for club and country, having featured in the ISL for FC Goa and ATK FC in the first two ISL campaigns. –IANS RSG Share this story Tags
