Sam Altman points to the Great Open Function Drop, Tease O3 and O4 Mini models before GPT5 Roll Out | Mint
Openai CEO Sam Altman set the Tech World Abuzz with a series of revealing posts on his social media platform X, and he has an indication of important developments in the company’s AI road map. In a post shared early on Thursday, Altman expressed his excitement about a new feature that will be introduced, and wrote: ‘A few times a year I wake up early and can’t fall asleep again because we start a new feature I was so excited about. Today is one of the days! ‘ The remark elicited speculation in the AI community, with many who eagerly waited for details about the surprise exemption. This follows a significant update of Altman a few days before, on April 4, where he announced a shift in Openai’s release schedule. Unlike previous expectations, the company is now planning to execute models in the coming weeks called “O3” and “O4-Mini”, which printed the highly expected GPT-5 launch until later this year. “Change of plans: After all, we’re going to release O3 and O4 mini, probably in a few weeks, and then do GPT-5 in a few months,” Altman posted. “There are a lot of reasons for this, but the most exciting thing is that our GPT-5 can make much better than we originally thought.” He acknowledged that the integration of all components into GPT-5 was more complicated than expected, and noted that Openai also works to ensure that it has the necessary infrastructure to deal with what he believes will be an ‘unprecedented question’. In another post the same day, Altman hinted at the progress of the O3 model, suggesting that the version released would exceed previous previews. ‘We could really improve what we had for O3 in many ways; I think people will be happy … ‘he wrote. The announcements increased the anticipation in the technology industry, with experts predicting that these interim releases could provide important insights into the capabilities and direction of GPT-5. While Openai remains trapped on specific functions, Altman’s remarks indicate that the firm is not only focused on innovation, but also to scalability and user experience.
