Chinese hackers target US law firms including Williams & Connolly

The FBI’s Washington Field Office investigates a series of alleged cyber infiltrations that target the leading US law firms by Chinese hackers, according to a New York Times report Tuesday, citing two sources familiar with the case. One of the firms concerned, Williams & Connolly, confirmed to Reuters that hackers have access to some of his computer systems, although this did not specifically attribute the attacks to China. The firm said a small number of attorney email bills were compromised by a ‘zero-day attack’. “It is important that there is no evidence that confidential customer data has been withdrawn from any other part of our IT system, including from databases where client files are stored,” the firm said, as reported by Reuters. It is said to have taken steps to block the threat, adding that there is no evidence of any unauthorized traffic on his network. The FBI and the Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment. It is important that there is no evidence that confidential customer data has been withdrawn from any other part of our IT system. US officials have been complaining about China-linked hacking activity for decades, claiming that many of the attacks are focused on stealing intellectual property belonging to US businesses.
