(Bloomberg) – Learning and Español Colombian senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay were shot in Bogota at an event, with his condition still unclear. The 39-year-old candidate of the opposition Centro Democratico party was taken to a medical center in the Colombian capital, Semana reports. The online footage of the shooting showed that Uribe’s head and back were covered with blood, reports The Outlet. The armed man was arrested, Bogota Mayor Carlos Galan said on X. The shooting drew immediate condemnation of President Gustavo Petro’s government, which repeated his commitment to the protection of all political leaders. Uribe is the grandson of former President Julio César Turbay and the son of the slain journalist Diana Turbay. He was working on a campaign in Fontibon, a popular neighborhood in West Bogota. ‘Violence can never be the way forward. I strongly condemn the attack against Miguel Uribe, ‘Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia said at X. “I sincerely hope he is safe and out of danger.” Uribe leaned hard in law and order, economic stability and a pro-business platform in his Senate role-where in 2022 he won more votes than any other candidate. A near ally of former President álvaro Uribe, he has long warned that Colombia falls back into violence. “They are dragging us back to a past of violence we do not want to return to,” Miguel Uribe said at a bank conference in Cartagena on June 5. “Without security, there is nothing: physical safety, public order, legal certainty, clear rules, institutional stability and rule of law.” Uribe, who was trained at the Universidad de Los Andes of Colombia and Harvard’s Kennedy School, vehemently criticized Petro’s leftist reforms.
