Continuous heavy rain for 12 hours, landslide in 7 places, many houses have flowed into Darjeeling

Darjeeling. On Saturday, several landslides occurred as a result of constant heavy rain in the Darjeeling hills in the northern part of Western Bengals, which killed at least 20 people and many others disappeared. Many houses were washed away due to landslides, roads were damaged and many remote towns lost contact. This information was provided by officers. According to reports drafted by NDRF and District Administration, it was reported that people were killed in many places – Sarsali, Jasbirgaon, Mirik Basti, Dhar Village (Matchi), Nagarcata and Mirik Lake. Richard Lepcha, subdivision officer of Darjeeling (SDO), told PTI that rescue and assistance is underway with the help of police, local administration and disaster response team. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced compensation for the victims, but did not mention the amount and said that she would visit Northern Bengals on October 6 and would judge the situation in the area where a large number of tourists were also affected. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the deaths, saying that the situation in Darjeeling and surrounding areas, in the light of heavy rain and landslide, is being monitored carefully. At least 40 people were rescued from the rubble in the village of Nagrakata, where many houses collapsed due to heavy landslides. Northern Bengale Minister Udayan Guha described the situation as “worrying” and described the number of death seventeen, referring to the report. Guha told Pti language: ‘The loss of life is sad. According to our report, 11 people died in Mirik and six in Darjeeling. But the number has not yet been confirmed. Landslides disrupted traffic on large routes, including Mirik-Sukhiapokhari road, while the communication lines of various hillside settlements were broken. The chief minister said she would visit Northern Bengals on Monday to assess the situation and that he is currently monitoring the developments from the control room at the Naban Secretary of State. While talking to the TV 9 Bangla news channel by phone, Banerjee described the situation as ‘serious’. He said: ‘Due to constant rain in Bhutan, water was washed away in North Bengals. This disaster is sorry – natural disasters are beyond our control. We are very sad. I held virtual meetings with officials from five districts affected with the general secretary. I monitor the situation of six in the morning. The chief minister said she would leave for Northern Bengals on Monday afternoon with general secretary Manoj pant, and watch the situation of Siliguri. She decided to go there on Sunday after the closing of Durga Puja Carnival in Kolkata, in which more than 100 Puja committees will participate. According to Banerjee, there was more than 300 mm of rain within 12 hours, causing severe floods and landslides in at least seven places. Their safety is our responsibility and the administration will ensure this. Banerjee also announced that the families of those who died in the disaster will receive the remuneration of the government and that one of their members will find work. However, he did not mention the amount. A senior police officer said there was a major obstacle in rescue work due to heavy and continuous rain. He said: ‘This area is smooth and many houses are damaged. The loss is still assessed. It becomes very difficult to work for machines on these slopes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on X: ‘There was a lot of sadness due to loss of life and property in a bridge accident in Darjeeling. I have compassion on those who have lost their loved ones. I wish the injured will be healed soon. According to the NDRF, road connectivity in the Darjeeling district and Northern Sikkim is severely interrupted and an iron bridge connecting Siliguri with the Mirik-digling route has been damaged, disrupting access to the region.
