Curly Pixie Goals—28 Styles That Supply Texture, Volume, and Attitude – ryan

Pixue cuts first burst onto the scene in the early 1920s during the iconic flapper era. Over 100 years later, many of today’s biggest stars, including Viola Davis, Julia Garner, and Halle Berry, are known for sporting their signature pixie cuts. These short, cute, and practical haircuts also enhance natural hair textures. In fact, according to celebrity hairstylist Sophie Gutterman, opting for curly pixie hairstyles is a great idea for summer and beyond.

“Going for the (curly pixie) cut can be extremely freeing,” says Gutterman. “It’s also fun because you can wear it in so many different ways. It’s easy to wear it curly, blown out straight, or slicked down with some soft finger waves.” So, if you need help narrowing down how to wear your curly pixie (or some convincing to get one), you’ll find all the inspiration here.

Below are 28 ways celebs are sporting the curly pixie.

Zoë Kravitz is no stranger to sporting different hairstyles—and she’s certainly not scared to go short. This tousled, wavy pixie is cool and effortless. Kravitz’s longer pieces are gathered up in spikes to give this an edgy vibe.

Lashana Lynch’s super-cropped, micro pixie is a class in personal style. The No Time to Die actress sports her natural (and super hydrated) curls, which are stunning on their own. However, to add her own edge, flair, and drama, Lynch adorned one side of her head with silver, safety-pin-like hair accessories.

Here, Irish actress Ruth Negga wears ’20s pinup-inspired curls that are extra defined in her pixie. She leaves a few curly strands out front for a soft and subtle bang moment. The keen observer will notice a bejeweled hairpin to keep the hair in place (and perfectly complement the gems on Negga’s dress).

Curly hair looks amazing when it’s dyed blonde. Nathalie Emmanuel proves that much here. What’s also great about her pixie style is that the curls are longer, which allows them to serve as bangs. And the contrast between Emmanuel’s blonde locks and dark brows? An epic combo.

Other than a short length, pixie cuts are not restricted to any other hair rules. Actress and icon Rita Moreno shows how to embrace your natural strands—in texture and hue—with this longer, all-gray pixie cut.

A cropped cut can really sing with the right style, like braids. Danai Gurira’s braided pixie features a wavy pattern and tight braids. It’s unique and perhaps unexpected, but that’s the best thing for your hair.

Joey King at the Emmy Awards in Hollywood.

King’s wavy texture is perfect for this deep side part pixie. Since the actress’s curls aren’t super defined, bringing in more hair from one side helps feign fullness. Consider using a mousse for curly hair—like Briogeo Yuzu + Plum Oil Full Miracle Styling Foam—to keep your hair big.

Tips

If you’re looking for other ways to add volume to your hair, you can also try blow-drying your hair upside down, teasing your roots, or changing the direction of your part.

Getting a pixie cut when you have curly or wavy hair definitely counts as giving yourself a low-maintenance haircut. What’s more is that this style is appropriate for so many occasions, including formal events like red carpets. Here, singer and rapper Coi Leray proves that with a little styling, a pixie can give some serious glam.

Gutterman loves styling curly pixies in finger wave curls. Doing so is easy; all you have to do is use a comb and fingers to create alternating S-wave patterns throughout. Here, Turner-Smith does a side part for some extra glam.

Wear your natural curls out in a cool Afro like Solange Knowles. Her bleached blonde hue adds extra depth and drama to her ‘do. Since bleaching thicker, curlier hair can damage it, be sure to use hair products that are color-safe and hydrating.

You can also opt for a really short and coily pixie like Rihanna. Her hair is almost exactly the same length throughout, but the top is slightly longer to accentuate her coils. To make sure your natural hair is moisturized to this level, consider using a hair mask for hydration.

Simple and chic, you can also wear your natural curls out in a cropped, side-parted Afro like Nyoung’o. Gutterman says you’ll want to style hair with a good gel and leave-in moisturizer combo to keep curls hydrated and touchable.

If the style is named after one of the greatest artists of all time (i.e., Botticelli), you know it’s a good one. Opt for something soft and romantic, like Garner’s bleached blonde Botticelli curls, for a classic curly pixie look. The extra length will help your curls sing.

To really define your curls like Logan Browning, Gutterman recommends using a styling cream that will add some extra bounce. Then dry with a diffuser; her pick is the T3 Fit Diffuser and Fit Dryer.

One of the best parts of the wet hair look is that it looks good on any hairstyle—especially curly pixies. Hudson wears her curls slicked back with her edges accenting her hairline.

Curly hair can be blown out and still retain some of its amazing texture. To add some dimension to the cut, go for an auburn ombré, with your dark roots lightening up as they reach the top of your pixie cut.

Like the French bob, the quintessential French pixie involves tousled loose waves and that effortless je-ne-sais-quoi attitude. Here, Audrey Tautou wears hers with extra shine to finish the look.

Amandla Stenberg’s piecey spirals make for a great curly pixie that you can dress up or wear every day. Give it a deep side part for added volume.

Afro Pixie

If you have 4C hair, consider a shorter crop like Kat Graham’s curly Afro. It’s low-maintenance when it comes to styling, but don’t forget to invest in lots of moisture to keep strands hydrated and healthy.

The queen of boho chic, Nicole Richie’s feathered pixie is relaxed and easy-breezy. But that doesn’t mean that her curly texture is lost. With a mix of dark roots and blonde tips, her color combo adds dimension to her entire look.

Halle Berry’s deconstructed finger waves at the 2023 Oscars were the moment. Covering one eye gave her curly pixie a modern and fresh twist on the classic style, and it also added tons of volume to her strands.

Betty Boop Pixie

Teyana Taylor takes selfie indoors while wearing a black robe.

Back in the 1930s, there was a sultry cartoon pin-up girl named Betty Boop. She wore a red corset, matching undies, black fishnets, and black heels. Her hair looked almost exactly like Teyana Taylor’s does here. To blow out your curls for a wavy texture like Taylor’s, Gutterman says to use a small round brush and focus your dryer on your ends to smooth out strands and give the ends that curl.

Tips

If your hair is too dense to fit in the round brush, Gutterman suggests using “your hands to push the hair back and forth while drying.”

Again, you can’t go wrong with a classic Afro like Keke Palmer’s. Use a hydrating leave-in conditioner, like the Pattern by Tracee Ellis Ross Leave-In Conditioner for Curly & Coily Hair, to keep your natural curls healthy.

An easy way to style an Afro curly pixie is to give it a side part. Davis’s deep part gives her style added depth and volume.

For a more abstract take on your curly pixie, go structural. Tilda Swinton’s strands are blown out and flipped over in a geometric shape for a dynamic look. To add more dimension, Swinton’s hair is parted in three ways to create asymmetry.
