Deputy Head of DPD invites Indonesian parliamentary youth to realize productive democracy

Jakarta – Deputy Chairman of the DPD RI Tamsil Linrung opened the 2025 Indonesian Parliamentary Youth Conference (PPI) in Jakarta. Tamsil emphasized the important role of the youth as the nation’s moral energy that should direct their enthusiasm and courage towards meaningful political development. Tamsil said the parliament is not only a political institution but also a think tank which is the ‘brain of the nation’. Parliament, Tamsil said, is a place where the nation’s ideas and conscience are brought together and then formulated into policies that are in favor of the people. “The executive may move the nation’s hands, but parliament actually moves its mind. This is where public morals are tested, and collective wisdom forged,” Tamsil said in a written statement on Thursday (23/10/2025). Scroll to continue content “Thoughts born in parliament must spring from the pulse of people’s lives,” he continued. Tamsil emphasized that the Indonesian Parliamentary Youth is a strategic forum for the younger generation to hone critical thinking skills, dialectics and build a healthy and ethical political culture. According to Tamsil, forums like this are a think tank for young people to develop arguments, appreciate differences and grow political maturity. “Healthy politics is born from healthy debate. Debates are not battles, but reason leads to truth,” Tamsil said. “From debate comes knowledge, from knowledge grows policy, and from policy comes justice,” he added. Tamsil also quoted Mohammad Hatta’s views in the book ‘Our Democracy’, which said that true democracy is a productive and substantive democracy, not just a democracy that is busy in the debate and election halls. According to Tamsil, a productive democracy is a democracy that creates wealth and is based on a spirit of mutual cooperation. “Mutual cooperation is not only a social legacy but the most basic political principle. Democracy without mutual cooperation will become an arena for individualistic competition,” Tamsil said. “However, democracy with a spirit of mutual cooperation will become a garden of cooperation that promotes mutual prosperity,” he continued. Furthermore, Tamsil reminded the conference attendees that the courage to think differently must always be accompanied by direction and responsibility. In a political context, every idea and word conveyed must have a moral basis and take into account the interests of the people. “To think for a young member of parliament means to carry a mandate. That’s why you have to learn from childhood that thinking is worship, and politics is devotion,” said Tamsil. In the current age of information floods, Tamsil also advised the younger generation of parliament to become the nation’s intellectual anchor. He reminded young people not to be easily swayed by superficial public opinion, but to remain grounded in knowledge and truth. “Build politics based on knowledge, not just popularity. Make politics a way to distribute benefits, not a tool to amass power,” Tamsil stressed. Tamsil expressed his appreciation to all Indonesian parliamentary youth administrators and committees for their commitment to building a civilized political education space. He hopes that this conference will be the starting point for the birth of a young generation capable of balancing ideas and actions and leading the nation to a productive democracy and mutual cooperation. “With full confidence, let us make this conference the beginning of a young intellectual movement that will lead the nation to a productive and cooperative democracy,” Tamsil said.
