Diwali fireworks sales in Sivakasi crossed Rs 7,000 crore
Chennai, October 20 (IANS). The festival of Diwali is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country. Meanwhile, record sales of coconuts also took place. According to the Firecracker Traders Federation, crackers worth about Rs 7,000 crore were sold during the festive season, marking a significant increase of Rs 1,000 crore compared to last year’s turnover of Rs 6,000 crore. Every year, millions of people across India celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights, by wearing new clothes, decorating their homes and bursting colorful firecrackers. A huge crowd gathered in the major fireworks manufacturing centers of the country (Sivakasi, Virudhunagar and Sattur in Tamil Nadu). Traders said that before the festival, buyers from all over the country flocked to these cities. Orders also came in from other states, reflecting renewed enthusiasm after years of lackluster festivals due to environmental restrictions and the pandemic-related recession. This year also saw a wave of innovation in the market. The introduction of new varieties of biscuits such as pizza and watermelon caught people’s attention and became instant bestsellers. Manufacturers said strong demand for such new products helped boost overall sales. The federation attributed this increase in sales in part to the easing of restrictions in many states. Especially in Delhi, where a complete ban was in place for many years, the recent court approval allowing the bursting of green coconuts has significantly increased demand across the country. Often called the fireworks capital of India, Sivakasi employs thousands of workers and accounts for about 90 percent of the country’s fireworks production. Traders said this year’s festival brought much-needed relief to the industry, which has been facing uncertainty due to environmental concerns and regulatory hurdles. The sky across India lit up again with the glow of fireworks. Diwali 2025 has not only brought back the festive spirit but also awakened a ray of hope among thousands of small manufacturers and traders in the fireworks sector of Tamil Nadu. –IANS VKU/AS Share this story Tags
