Jakarta – DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung admitted that a number of public cemeteries (TPUs) in the South Jakarta (Jaksel) area were full. The DKI Provincial Government (Pemprov) is currently reviewing, including the proposal for multi-storey cemeteries to overcome limited land in the capital. He said the issue of cemetery land availability is one of the challenges Jakarta is currently facing in line with the density of urban areas. “It is indeed now a problem and is being studied. There is a proposal, but it has not yet been decided whether multi-level burials are allowed,” Pramono said on Tuesday (21/10/2025) in Thamrin. SCROLL TO CONTINUE CONTENT Pramono added that the DKI Provincial Government is also considering the option of opening a new cemetery outside the Jakarta area. However, the final decision regarding this policy will be determined after technical and legal studies are completed. “Some suggested making the cemetery outside Jakarta. We are currently thinking about it, and soon I will decide,” he explained. 9 TPUs in South Jakarta Full Previously, 9 TPUs in South Jakarta did not accept any new graves. This is because the land at the nine TPUs is already full. “The TPU covers West Tanjung, Jagakarsa, Kampung Kongsi, South Grogol, Kebagusan, Pisangan, East Pejaten, West Pejaten and Cikoko,” Arwin Adlin Barus, head of the trails and cemeteries division of the Department of Parks and Forestry in South Jakarta, said when asked, quoted by Antara, Monday (20/10). Arwin said that nine of the 16 TPUs in South Jakarta ran out of capacity, so they were transferred to other TPUs. Based on data from the South Jakarta City Parks and Forestry Department, a number of TPUs, such as Menteng Pulo I, II and III, Jeruk Purut, Tanah Kusir, Cidodol, Kampung Kandang, Srengseng Sawah and Pasar Minggu, are more than 95 percent full. This condition makes local governments think twice about providing funeral services for residents. Arwin said that the South Jakarta City Government implemented an overlapping burial system as a solution. “The South Jakarta City Government is implementing an overlapping burial system as the main solution to overcome limited TPU land,” Arwin stressed. Overlapping burial means that the body is buried with family members already buried in the TPU. Another option being prepared is a new cemetery at another TPU that still has plots available, although the number is limited. The South Jakarta City Government ensures that arrangements are made so that funeral services can continue. Technical policies are handed over to TPU managers in accordance with regional regulations.
