The average cost for preparing a thali at home is calculated based on input prices prevailing in the north, south, east and west india. The decline of the year-to-year in the cost of vegetarian Thali was due to a sharp drop in tomato prices. Tomato prices fell 34% in March 2025 to £ 21 per kg of £ 32 per kg in March 2024. The arrival of the tomato crop across the country increased by 29%. The increase was mainly in the southern states, which had a robust Rabi crops due to an increased surface area and a better yield on the year amid a healthy reservoir levels. Furthermore, the sharp decline in tomato prices has contributed to the cost of the non-vegetarian thali being prevented. However, the overall decline was counteracted by rising prices of other commodities. For example, a 2% increase in the year in broiler prices, which accounts for about 50% of a non-vactary Thali’s costs-have submitted any reduction. Broiler prices rose as a result of a low base of the previous year, when the oversupply lowered prices. The cost of vegetarian and non-vegetarian Thali fell monthly by 2% and ~ 5% in March 2025. Furthermore, vegetables such as onions, potatoes and tomato prices fell by 5%, 7% and 8% respectively amid fresh arrivals. Pushan Sharma, Director Research, Crisil Intelligence, said: “Vegetable prices remained subdued in March with that of onion, potato and tomato dropping on the month due to fresh arrivals. The monthly change reflects the impact on the expenses of the ordinary man. 7% drop in the broiler prices. Onions are likely to be supported by a strong export momentum, while potato prices are also expected to enter a moderate increase in the market.
