Durga Puja 2025: No Visarjan today in Kolkata as it is Thursday? Here is the reason why it is considered a bad sign
There is often confusion about Durga Puja Visarjan held on a Thursday. However, there is no limit in the Hindu religious rules. The festival, known as Vijayadashami, is determined by the Hindu moon calendar and can fall on any weekday. In Durga Puja 2025 Visarjan will take place on Thursday, October 2. Sometimes, especially in Western Bengals, Visarjan is usually avoided. This habit is based on traditional beliefs, which connect the farewell to the goddess to rituals associated with a daughter’s vidai. For dedicated, Goddess Durga is like a daughter. So her welcome and farewell are done like that of a daughter. At the time of farewell, women offer items such as clothing, sweets, rice, cumin and money in a basket as part of rituals. Fans throw tears just as parents do when they send their daughter. According to Hindu faith, a daughter should not leave her parents’ home on a Thursday. It is thought to cause poverty and problems. Thursday is linked to the goddess Lakshmi. Since daughters are also seen as forms of the goddess, it is believed that her departure removes wealth. Therefore, the goddess Durga Visarjan is also avoided on a Thursday. It is unclear whether the rule will be followed in Kolkata, where Durga Puja is celebrated like a daughter coming to her father’s home. However, there are practical reasons to avoid Visarjan on October 2. Kolkata may experience worse flooding. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Vijayadashami 2025. Several districts in southern Bengal face the same threat. Rainfall can reach 64–115 mm, exacerbating the weakening and traffic chaos. Areas such as South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Hooghly and North 24 Parganas are also attentive. Dussehra 2025 Durga Puja Vijayadashami is also called Dussehra. However, unlike the festival of Western Bengals, it celebrates a different facet of mythology. While in Bengal, it honors the victory of Maa Durga over the demon Mahishasura. Dussehra is related to the Ramayana. Dussehra is the end of the nine-day Navratri. The festival commemorates Shree Ram’s victory over Ravan. It symbolizes the triumph of justice over arrogance and evil. Celebrations include colorful marches, Ramlila plays and the burning of the effects of Ravan, Meghnath and Kumbhkarna. Families collect, share festive meals and exchange greetings.
