Egyptian Minister of Provision: We have collected 2.5 million tonnes of wheat since the beginning of the harvest season

The Egyptian ministry of provision has succeeded since the start of the current harvest season to collect 2.5 million tonnes of local wheat, and according to Sharif Farouk, the Egyptian Minister of Provision and Internal Trade, the Egyptian Minister of Provision and Internal Trade exceeded the amount. He added in an interview with ‘Al -Sharq’ in Cairo that an attractive price for the ton before the start of the season contributed to encouraging farmers to increase the patch planted with wheat planted. It was a difference in an interview with “Al -Sharq”, last February, that its government is aimed at increasing the purchase of wheat from farmers by about 11% to 4 million tonnes in the harvest season, which begins in mid -April. The wheat transplant season started in Egypt in the middle of the November and ended in January last year, while the harvest began in mid -April and ended in mid -July. Egypt’s import of wheat jumped to their highest levels during 2024 to reach 14.2 million tonnes, an increase of 31%. The Egyptian government share reached 6.2 million tonnes, an increase of 30% over the previous year. According to Farouk in the previous interview, the government intends to import about 6 million tonnes of wheat from abroad this year. However, in light of the rise in world prices and the decline in the local currency exchange rate against the dollar, Egypt, however, reduced its import of wheat during the first quarter of 2025 by 3% compared to the same period in the previous year to 3.2 million tonnes, according to a government document seen by the “east”. In a previous statement, the Egyptian official said that “the total Egyptian consumption of wheat has reached last year, about 20 million tons, and is expected to consume the same amount this year.” Regarding the addition of goods to the commodity stock exchange, Farouk said that the ministry is considering amending the legislation on the stock exchanges of the commodity to allow the expansion of additional goods, which enable small farmers to display their goods at reasonable prices. He added that there is a communication with the international stock exchanges in Türkiye and Russia, and meetings organized with the Chicago Stock Exchange to see his experiences in this area.
