New -Delhi, September 27 (IANS). The Electoral Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday denied the allegations made by the congress party about the alleged irregularities in the Uttarakhand Panchayat election and cited the claims as wrong and misleading. The dispute began when a video was shared on the official handle X of Congress, claiming that the India Electoral Commission failed to act against the nominations, whose names were in more than one voters list. The Post further claimed that, despite the directions of the Uttarakhand High Court, the Electoral Commission refused to remove such duplicate entries, thereby imposing the Supreme Court a fine of Rs 2 Lakh on the Electoral Commission. Congress calls it a ‘voting theft’ and accuses the BJP and the Electoral Commission to crush democracy. The Electoral Commission responded sharply to this and checked a fact by its official X handle and made it clear that the position of the congress was virtually wrong. The Electoral Commission said: “This post is wrong and misleading.” The Electoral Commission emphasized that the Panchayat and Municipal Elections are not carried out by the India Electoral Commission, but by the State Election Commissions. Referring to Article 324 of the Constitution, the ECI said that the Electoral Commission is limited to the election of Parliament, the legislature of every state and office of the president and the vice president. The Electoral Commission has made it clear that all Panchayats and municipal elections are under the jurisdiction of the state commissions concerned. The commission also shared an official link between the India Electoral Commission and the State Election Commissions to explain the difference in roles and responsibilities. This explanation of the Electoral Commission came at a time when the political fierce intensified, in which Congress targets the Electoral Commission in the light of the upcoming state and local elections. While the opposition expressed concern about the suspected differences in the voters list, the India Electoral Commission constantly said that only state election bodies were responsible for the election at the Panchayat level. -Ians Aks/DSC shares this story -tags
