Energy technology top patent applications in Saudi Arabia
Patents in oil and gas technologies are top applications filed with the Saudi Intellectual Property Authority, reflecting the maturity of this sector in Saudi Arabia, and a number of patent applications in clean energy have begun to appear, according to Noura Al-Amari, executive vice president for intellectual property and strategic policy at the Saudi Intellectual Property Authority. She noted in an interview with Al-Sharq that the choice of the authority to be an international search and investigation office for intellectual property and patents reflects the Kingdom’s position in the regional and international communities, and confirms international confidence in national capabilities. Regarding the challenges facing the protection of intellectual property, Al-Amari pointed out that the rapid development in the digital field and the complexity that characterizes it, as well as the difficulty of proving the technical impact of software patents, is a challenge for the Authority, but at the same time it is an opportunity to modernize and improve the regulatory and legislative frameworks.
