Expect India-EU FTA to come into effect this year, says the Swedish Trade Commissioner

Indore, April 15 (PTI) Sweden’s trade and investment commissioner to India Sofia Högman said on Tuesday that she expects the proposed free trade agreement between India and the European Union (EU) to come into effect this year. Högman emphasized that this agreement will open new doors for raising the bilateral partnership between India and Sweden. India and the EU discuss the free trade agreement in a phased way. Both sides completed the 10th round of talks for the proposed agreement in Brussels last month. The next round of talks is expected to be held in New -Delhi in May. Trade experts believe it is important to strengthen economic relations between India and the EU in the light of US President Donald Trump’s high tariff policy. Sweden is one of the 27 countries associated with the EU. Sweden’s trade commissioner Högman said with reporters here on the sidelines of an event that a delegation led by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited at the end of February and strengthened the EU dialogue over a free trade agreement this year. She said: ‘When we talk about what is going on in the world today, we of course have hope and ambitions that will implement the (proposed) free trade agreement between the EU and India during this year.
