Omaha, Neb. (AP) -Immigration authorities attacked at least one Omaha food production aptitude on Tuesday morning, which inspired a few small protests, but details on how many workers were affected were not immediately clear. Omaha police and Douglas County Sheriff said immigration officials warned them about their plans, and their departments helped block traffic nearby where many food production plants are located while the US immigration and customs housing officials worked. Ice officials did not respond to questions immediately. Meat packaging plants very much rely on immigrant workers who are willing to do the physically demanding work. The industry has not yet been the focus of President Donald Trump’s immigration having efforts, but the administration has strengthened its efforts over the past few weeks. This week, Trump called out the national guard to respond to continued protests in Los Angeles about his immigration policy. In Omaha, a small group of people came out to protest the raids, and some of them even jumped on the front bumper of a vehicle to try to stop officers. Glenn Valley Foods officials did not immediately respond to an investigation by the Associated Press, but WOWT reported that CEO and owner Gary Rohwer said he was not made aware of the operation beforehand and that there was no warrant. “Of course not. It’s an attack,” says Rohwer, whose company makes the Gary’s Quicksteak brand of ready-to-roast steak. Federal agents entered the plant at about 9am on Tuesday with a list of 97 people they wanted to display, Rohwer said. He said the company regularly checks the immigration status of employees with the Federal E-verify database. The raids led to one commissioner of Douglas County stepping out in the middle of a meeting on Tuesday to go down to the area he is in southeastern Omaha where the plants are located. Commissioner Roger Garcia and city councilor Ron Hug both expressed concern about the impact of the raids on families. “These actions are deeply harmful to the South Oomaha community,” Hug said in a statement. “Not only are they unfair and disruptive, but they also undermine the economic stability and growth of district 4 and the wider community directly.” Douglas County sheriff Aaron Hanson said his agency was “not the exact nature of the Ice operation”, but that his agency is there to help ensure “peace and safety” of everyone in the area. On a question when he heard about the operation, he said his department had received “reverent and ample notice”. He says he got the notice a week ago.
