Foreign Minister reveals 110 Indonesian citizens fleeing Cambodia online scam, some don't want to go home

Jakarta – Foreign Minister Sugiono opened his voice on a number of Indonesian nationals (WNI) suspected of being involved in a riot while trying to escape from an online fraud ‘company’ in Chrey Thum City, Cambodia. Sugiono said that his party is monitoring the current situation. “We will see what the needs are,” Sugiono told journalists at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday (10/22/2025). Those who don’t want to go home have their own reasons. “Whether everyone wants to go home or not, because there were also those who went to our home who apparently didn’t want to go home, that’s it, we’ll see,” he said. “Everyone has their reasons,” Sugiono continued when asked why Indonesian citizens were reluctant to return to Indonesia. Previously, the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Phnom Penh noted that there are now 110 Indonesian citizens detained following the incident. A total of 67 people will be sent home. The Indonesian embassy initially received data that 97 people had been arrested. Most recently, there are now 110 Indonesian citizens. “Since October 17, 2025, the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh has continued to coordinate with the Cambodian police and related parties after receiving reports of riots involving Indonesian citizens in Chrey Thum City, Kandal Province,” the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh wrote via its Instagram account, Wednesday (22/510/2022). The Indonesian embassy explained that the 110 Indonesian citizens were detained at the local immigration detention center. They are registered to be sent home. “From the results of the search, 110 Indonesian citizens were detained from the place and are now in Preak Pnov Immigration Detention Center, Phnom Penh, for the data collection and repatriation process,” he said. The Indonesian Embassy continues to ensure the protection of all Indonesian citizens.
